Memorial Banner Art Installation

In cooperation with ABD Skywatchers and SF Night Ministry, we displayed these banners that carry the names of 296 people who died on the streets of San Francisco in 2024. We hung them during the season of Lent as we journey with Jesus through the wilderness to his own death at the hands of those who yelled “Crucify Him!”

These banners were made by several faith communities using letters cut out from colorful scraps of fabric. They were displayed at the steps of City Hall as each name was read out loud during a vigil held around Winter Solstice.

These banners are not only memorial banners, but they are art as they speak to one of our biggest visible social problems – homelessness and spur needed conversation around justice, advocacy, and real solutions to a growing vulnerable community.
